When we think of violent attacks we most often think of that stranger in the dark alley or lurking in secluded parts of parks waiting for their victim before they strike. We feel that as long as we avoid those places we will never be the victim of a violent assault that can change our lives forever. But sadly for some this is not the truth. Every day women, teens and others are attacked in their very own homes by people they know and love. Often referred to as domestic violence these attacks can be far worse on the victim than had the person who hit them been a stranger. It is not too hard to fight back when the person who is hurting you is a complete stranger that means nothing to you. But when you love and care for your attacker it can be harder to be willing to fight back.
But just like with a complete stranger fight back you must and that is why having at least some martial arts skills is so very important for everyone. While we may not always want to fight back we have to even when it is someone we love. Domestic abuse is a growing problem and many women never even come forward for help.
While some may argue that using violence to end violence is not the answer there are times when using the skills that come from knowing hand to hand combat training are necessary to save a life or at least prevent the type of injury that can last a lifetime. Fighting back can give that precious time needed to get away from the attack and start taking the steps to get out of the situation for the rest of a life.

With crime on the rise and criminals no longer just preying on the weak it is now more important than ever for everyone to learn self defense in order to protect themselves and not be just another victim of crime. From women to children and even large strong men the possibility of becoming a target are growing more likely for all of us and for those who are prepared the outcome will be better than it will be for those who are not.
While we know we need to learn either martial arts or combat self defense we may not always be able to fit the training into our daily lives. Between work and family many of us already have too many obligations and fitting in a class across town may just not be in the cards. Often these classes are not offered at convenient times for us or the time getting to and from them just is not something that can be easily scheduled in. But just because a self defense class is not convenient for you and your life that is no excuse not to be prepared for an attack on your life one day. Should you be attacked and not be prepared the priorities that were placed before self defense training will seem pretty ridiculous.
Now thanks to the internet and home DVD players anyone can train with a self defense video right in their very own home. These videos most often include plenty of techniques and are taught in a way that makes it easy to learn from home when it is the most convenient for you. Now there is no excuse to be a victim when you can take the control of your life and the outcome of certain events in your own hands.

There are so many classes and videos out there claiming to teach effective self defense tactics to those who want to protect themselves and their loved ones from harm. But not all of them are made the same and not all of them are really effective at teaching the skills that someone truly needs to take on the bad guy and come out without harm. While some of them boast that they can teach you one single move that can stop a fight immediately this may sound too good to be true. But really it is possible since there are places on the human body that can bring anyone to their knees, even the biggest attacker, if it is struck correctly with enough force.
So if bold claims can be true just how do you find the instructor that can teach self defense tactics that work? The key is the instructor themselves and not their claims of what they can teach. Those who have real life experience in the military with combat self defense, policemen, and those who have had to face the bad guy as part of their job or more than qualified to help the common individual learn the skills they need to fight off an attacker on the street.
Those who have been trained to fight for their life and have actually used it in real situations know just what is needed both physically and mentally to survive an attack. To learn the tactics and techniques that work it is important to choose the class or DVD that will work and the best way to compare them before getting on board it to compare the instructor to see just what experience they really have.

One of the biggest things that most people learn first in their self defense training is to stay off the ground when fighting off an attacker. While it is not always possible to follow this rule of thumb if at all possible most individuals should avoid grappling type situations. The reason for this of course is it takes away any maneuvering room while it also gives the advantage to the bigger person which most often is the attacker.
For those especially who rely on a form of martial arts for their self defense grappling takes away most all of the skills and techniques they have for fighting off an attacker. Most martial arts styles are based on punches and kicks that are done from the standing position making them ineffective once the ground comes into play. Since these are sport styles of fighting traditionally when one combatant ends up on the ground the fight is stopped to allow them to get back up. This will not happen in a attack situation with a bad guy.
Most forms of military self defense incorporate moves and techniques for grappling both while standing as well as once on the ground. These styles are designed for soldiers who are fighting for their lives as well and just like street scenes the fight will sometimes end up on the ground. While it is best to just stay off the ground so that you have more options to protect yourself and get out of the situation for those times when the fight for your life ends up in a ground grappling situation do whatever it takes to get loose and get back to your feet to gain the advantage back from your attacker.

The two things we seem to hear on the news each week is of violent attacks suffered by members of a our community and budget cuts that make the police have to work with less money. While the crime rate around us is going up the amount of police being used to enforce the laws and keep citizens safe is going down. What this means for the average person is you or someone you love will more than likely be the victim of a crime one day and when it happens the police will probably not be around to help.
This is why it is more important than ever for everyone to get martial arts training to protect themselves in the event of an attack one day. Martial arts will prepare someone to fight off an attacker in many situations and can be used by anyone of any age man or woman. Even when the attacker is larger in size with the right training and techniques it is possible to overcome the surprise attack and turn the tide in your favor to allow you to escape and find the help you need. Without this training you will be at the mercy of the attacker and the police we all depend on already stretched thin may not be there in time for you.
There are many martial arts styles available to learn so it is possible to choose from several to get the one that will suit you best and just how you want to handle your own self defense. From just getting enough edge to get away to turning the attack around to make the aggressor become the defender choose the style that is best for you and it will be there when you need it.

There is much debate about what style of fighting is the best for use as self defense and to make matters worse for those looking for the ideal style, there is no right answer. There are so many variables in not only each style of fighting but also in the people using them and the situations they are used in that it makes no one form better than another.
While many martial arts techniques are effective for protecting yourself from an attacker many instructors choose to blend the best moves and skills from the various styles to get the most effective self defense. This gives the best of all worlds and while it will not make the student a belt class in any form of martial art it will make them very proficient at defending themselves in a real life scenario.
Other instructors include military self defense techniques into the training they give their students since this form of hand to hand fighting is more like the types of scenarios many will find should they be attacked on the street. While this type of fighting is based on more real life fighting and less on sport fighting like most of the martial arts.
While it is hard to compare military with martial arts self defense since they are so different for the most complete training a combination of several styles of martial arts along with military training will give the best results. But whichever form of self defense training you choose it will be the right one since any is better than none once you are confronted with someone who wants to hurt you on the street one day.

Martial arts are popular with those who are looking for a way to get fit while also learning some skills in order to protect themselves from attack. But while all martial arts styles are effective for getting fit they are not all equal when it comes to self defense. Martial arts styles vary and some are just not effective in real life street scenarios where there are no rules of engagement. So how do you decide which style of martial art is the one for you that will help in self defense on the street?
Before just jumping into a martial art style, take the time to study several to see what they offer. Learn if the style features more kicks or punches and is it designed for only sparring or can the techniques be used in a attack based scenario. To study each form see if you can visit a class, talk to students to see how they have applied these techniques in real life, and compare the styles that you are interested in.
Another effective way to compare the styles is to watch a self defense DVD for each one. This will give an idea of just how effective this form will be should you ever need to use it to protect yourself. Videos allow you to see the various moves and techniques in action and if used in a self defense scenario just how effective they are.
Of course once you decide on which martial art style you will study for fitness and self defense it does not mean that is the only style you can ever learn. Really the most effective self defense is a combination of several fighting styles that takes the most effective moves of each and applies them to staying alive in the event of an attack.

With crime on the rise self defense is something that is on the minds of many people so they can protect themselves and their loved ones from attack on the streets or even within their own home. Of course to learn self defense many turn to the local martial arts studio thinking this will be an effective fighting style to take on that bad guy. But depending on the style being taught it may only be slightly useful if even effective at all against a real life street fighting type of scenario.
Not all martial arts moves and styles are actually effective forms of fighting when trying to keep an attacker from harming you though. Most martial arts are for sport fighting meaning there is a set of rules that both combatants will follow during the engagement. Since these rules are in place it allows fighters to attempt moves that in a street fight scenario could get them into more trouble.
Many classes designed to teach hand to hand combat for self defense take the best martial arts techniques and combines them with other forms of fighting to create a style that does not follow rules and is not designed to be a form of sport fighting. These form a fighting style that will not have the safety of the attacker in mind and will include self defense techniques that will not only turn the tables on them but potentially place them in the hospital while you walk away unscathed.
While it may seem like something out of a Hollywood movie but with the right combination of martial arts, hand to hand combat, and practice anyone can fight off a much larger attacker and come out the winner in a fight for your life.

When we see that someone has been brutally attacked or robbed on the nightly news it is easy to think of it as just something that happens to other people. But just the night before, those people were thinking the same thing and it did end up happening to them, they became the news. While we all know we should take the warnings to heart and take the time to learn self defense to fight off any potential attacks we may one day face, we just never seem to get around to it. We feel we always have time to learn those self defense skills since we will not be the victim of an attack ourselves.
Other than not believing we will ever actually need to know how to fight off an attacker many just feel they do not have the time to fit the training into their already busy lives. But that could not be further from the truth. With a martial arts DVD anyone can train in the convenience of their own home when they have time. Even if it is only thirty minutes a couple of times a week this effort will pay off big should you ever become the victim of an attack.
With a video to teach martial arts anyone can learn at their own pace the skills they will need to fight off an attacker. From men to women and even kids, the moves and techniques should be learned by everyone and putting off taking the time to learn will not help should you need it now. You never know when you may become the victim of an attack so being prepared today will help you should you need it tomorrow.

Martial arts is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of self defense training but in reality this form of sport fighting is not the most effective way to defend yourself. For those who truly want to be able to protect themselves and their family from attack on the street or from a home invasion combat training is the most effective way to get this done.
Of course many are curious just what makes up combat training if it is not the martial arts that are touted as being perfect for fighting off an attacker. The problem with martial arts is these are based on sport fighting where there are specific rules that keep the combatants safe. But in self defense there are no rules and this is better suited for hand to hand combat training.
Hand to hand fighting uses the best tactics and techniques from military training as well as street fighting to create a system that will allow anyone to defend against an attack even when the attacker is much larger than them or even wielding a gun or knife. With a combination of punches, kicks, and grappling techniques that will allow you to get out of the grasp of an attacker and turn the tide on them so the attacker becomes the defender.
While it does sound violent your life is just that important and in some situations you have to fight if you want to go on living. For women who fear being the target of a rape or even younger kids who are being bullied these techniques can put an end to any type of attack quickly and easily. No more fumbling with mace or worse carrying a gun that may be turned and used against you, combat training is the most effective form of self defense.
