One of the biggest things that most people learn first in their self defense training is to stay off the ground when fighting off an attacker. While it is not always possible to follow this rule of thumb if at all possible most individuals should avoid grappling type situations. The reason for this of course is it takes away any maneuvering room while it also gives the advantage to the bigger person which most often is the attacker.
For those especially who rely on a form of martial arts for their self defense grappling takes away most all of the skills and techniques they have for fighting off an attacker. Most martial arts styles are based on punches and kicks that are done from the standing position making them ineffective once the ground comes into play. Since these are sport styles of fighting traditionally when one combatant ends up on the ground the fight is stopped to allow them to get back up. This will not happen in a attack situation with a bad guy.
Most forms of military self defense incorporate moves and techniques for grappling both while standing as well as once on the ground. These styles are designed for soldiers who are fighting for their lives as well and just like street scenes the fight will sometimes end up on the ground. While it is best to just stay off the ground so that you have more options to protect yourself and get out of the situation for those times when the fight for your life ends up in a ground grappling situation do whatever it takes to get loose and get back to your feet to gain the advantage back from your attacker.

There is much debate about what style of fighting is the best for use as self defense and to make matters worse for those looking for the ideal style, there is no right answer. There are so many variables in not only each style of fighting but also in the people using them and the situations they are used in that it makes no one form better than another.
While many martial arts techniques are effective for protecting yourself from an attacker many instructors choose to blend the best moves and skills from the various styles to get the most effective self defense. This gives the best of all worlds and while it will not make the student a belt class in any form of martial art it will make them very proficient at defending themselves in a real life scenario.
Other instructors include military self defense techniques into the training they give their students since this form of hand to hand fighting is more like the types of scenarios many will find should they be attacked on the street. While this type of fighting is based on more real life fighting and less on sport fighting like most of the martial arts.
While it is hard to compare military with martial arts self defense since they are so different for the most complete training a combination of several styles of martial arts along with military training will give the best results. But whichever form of self defense training you choose it will be the right one since any is better than none once you are confronted with someone who wants to hurt you on the street one day.
